Starting a blog on the journey to self-actualisation

Your first blog post sets the tone for everything that follows. It builds the foundation for your personal brand and lets your audience know what to expect. Whether this really holds true is up for debate, but I think it’s important to get it right. It’s like being on a first date—initial introductions might be a bit awkward as you get to know each other. You share a bit about yourself, your interests, and your career, and as time goes on, you might open up about your dreams and intentions. I think we can skip the awkward intros and go straight to the part where I share my intentions. I’m starting this blog to explore my thoughts and document my journey towards self-actualization.

What is self-actualization, you might ask? It was a new term for me when I first heard Dan Koe use it in a YouTube video titled “Ideas are the New Oil (How More People Get Rich in the Digital Age)“. The video was fantastic, all about building your personal brand in the digital space and how doing so can create incredible future opportunities. But what really struck a chord with me was how he described self-actualization as finding and embracing your own niche:

💬”Your niche is self-actualisation. If you are a value creator, a person trying to pursue your life work, your niche is self-actualisation. What makes you unique are the curiosities, the interests, skills and experience that you gain along the way, because that is unique to everybody. You are an experience vessel. You become a niche of one when you pass down that experience for others to utilise.

That statement resonated with me immediately. I replayed that part of the video and jotted down the quote. I had never heard the term “self-actualization” before, but that quote sparked my curiosity so I did a little digging. My search led me to discover that it’s typically associated with American psychologist Abraham Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. After reading several articles on the topic, my personal interpretation of self-actualisation is becoming the most authentic version of yourself and finding meaning and purpose in life. It involves personal growth, self-discovery, and reaching a state where you fulfill your unique capabilities and realize your true potential.

Do I feel self-actualized? Not quite, or at least not yet. I don’t want to come across as arrogant or full of myself, but I genuinely believe I have a lot of untapped potential ready to be channeled into something meaningful. While I’m still figuring out what that might be, starting a blog seems like a great first step. Writing down my thoughts and ideas, even virtually, gives them power and helps me stay committed to becoming a better version of myself. By sharing my reflections and ideas, I aim to focus on my growth, track my progress, and understand what works and what doesn’t. It’s like having a personal roadmap to keep me focused and moving forward.

I had a blog many years ago where I documented my journey of setting up my first home server. It started with me keeping notes on my initial adventures into virtualization, and I decided to share my findings in a blog format. I hoped that if my posts could help even one person facing the same issues or questions, the effort would be worthwhile. Unfortunately, I let the hosting and domain lapse because I lacked the time and motivation to keep writing, but I did discover some snapshots are available on the Wayback Machine so I might resurrect some of the content I had on there.

As I embark on this new blogging journey, I’m excited about the possibilities it holds. I know it won’t always be easy. There will be times when I struggle to find the right words or doubt the value of what I’m sharing. The imposter syndrome might even kick in. But I’m committed to pushing through those moments because I believe in the process. Each post is a step toward understanding myself better and honing my skills. I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can connect with others who are on their own paths of growth and maybe even inspire someone along the way. This blog isn’t just about me; it’s about creating a space for mutual growth and learning.

If you’re reading this and have your own experiences or insights into personal growth and self-actualisation, I’d LOVE to hear from you. Let’s support each other’s journeys. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments or reach out to me directly with any questions or topics you’d like to see covered. Together, we can navigate the path to self-actualisation.
